Test and Tune

Test, tune, dyno, we always seem to keep busy in between rounds. Each track we go to requires a different set up, Georgia was a fast e-brake entry on a big road corse as were Wall New Jersey is a small banked oval, more of a power on track.  So thanks to Naoki at Drift Day( www.driftday.com) a few other Nexen Tire drivers and I got on the Oval at the NOS center to dial things in. With a few more PSI of boost from or Turbonetics GTK 550  tubo and a few slight adjustments to the suspension i feel like we are ready for Wall!

Mohan records top-16 qualifying run at Drift Atlanta

May 13, 2010 (Signal Hill, California) – Drift Atlanta and Kyle Mohan have never gotten along all that well. Mohan has never qualified for tandem competition in Atlanta and usually suffers some kind of mechanical gremlin when his car hits the track there. It is safe to say that it isn’t the stop that he was most looking forward to in this year’s Formula Drift Pro Championship.

So it was all smiles in the KMR camp when Mohan qualified the Nexen Tires / Mazdatrix Mazda RX-8 in the fifteenth spot for Drift Atlanta this past weekend. After a conservative first run, which recorded him a 72.1 and put him in the middle of the field, Mohan went for broke on his second run and, despite dropping two tires as he carried more speed to the second clipping point, upped his score to a 78.2 to end up in fifteenth in a field of 52 cars.

His qualifying position would put him against Ross Petty. Petty and Mohan have drifted with each other throughout the years, from the earliest Drift Days in Southern California, so Mohan knew he was in for a tough top-32 battle.

“I know what Ross’ style is and he is very fast, and very aggressive,” said Mohan. “Our speeds were similar through both of the speed traps which meant we would put on a good show for the crowd. My best chance was to drive the Nexen / Mazdatrix Mazda RX-8 in as deep and as fast as I could.”

By virtue of his better qualifying score, Mohan led the first run and laid down a solid run, earning him a small advantage as Petty ran a shallow line to chase and dropped a wheel. On the second run, however, Mohan couldn’t make up an advantage that Petty had through the first clip. It was a close call, but Petty advanced to the top-16.

“The battle with Ross was tough, just like I thought it would be,” said Mohan afterwards. “He just got me off the line and I couldn’t make it up. But this is the first time we’ve had a good weekend at Drift Atlanta with no problems. We qualified well and scored some points  – that’s an improvement and I will take it!”

Mohan will drive next at the Redline Time Attack event on Memorial Day weekend at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. The next Formula Drift Pro Championship event is June 4-5 at Wall Speedway in Wall, New Jersey.
